How Yahtzee scoring works
A game is 13 rounds. On your turn you roll five dice up to three times, keeping any dice you like between rolls. Then you must write a score into exactly one empty category — and if nothing fits, you have to sacrifice a category with a zero. Choosing what to burn is where the game lives.
Upper section. Aces through Sixes score the sum of the matching dice only: three 4s and two 2s scored in Fours is 12. If your six upper boxes total 63 or more — that's an average of three-of-each — you earn the +35 bonus. Chasing that bonus is usually worth it: four-of-a-kind in fives or sixes early makes the whole section comfortable.
Lower section. Three of a Kind and Four of a Kind require the matching dice but score the total of all five. Full House (three of one number plus two of another) is a flat 25. Small Straight (four in a row, e.g. 2-3-4-5) is 30; Large Straight (five in a row) is 40. Chance is the sum of all five dice, no requirements — the classic dumping ground for a bad turn. And Yahtzee, five of a kind, scores 50.
Extra Yahtzees. Roll a second Yahtzee when your Yahtzee box already holds a 50 and you score a +100 bonus (tally it in the bonus row), then score the dice in another box under the joker rules: fill the matching upper box if it's open, otherwise any lower box (a joker Yahtzee counts as a Full House or Straight for those flat scores). If your Yahtzee box holds a zero, there's no bonus — but the joker placement still applies.
Totals. Add the upper section plus its bonus, add the lower section plus any Yahtzee bonuses, and the highest grand total wins. A solid game lands around 250; anything over 300 deserves a photo of the sheet.
