How volleyball scoring works

Rally scoring. Modern volleyball scores a point on every rally, whoever served — win the rally and you get the point and the next serve. Sets go to 25 points, win by 2 (a 25–24 set isn't over; play on until someone leads by two). Matches are best of five sets, and a deciding fifth set is shorter: to 15, still win by 2. On the sheet, cross off the next number in your team's ladder each time you win a rally — the highest crossed number is the live score, and a finished ladder reads back the whole set.

Rotation. Each team's six players serve in a fixed order. Write that order into boxes I–VI before the set: position I is the right-back — the server. When a team wins the serve back (a side-out), that team rotates one position clockwise, and the player moving into position I serves next. Serving out of order is a point and serve to the opponent, so the rotation boxes are the part of the sheet referees will actually ask to see. The same player keeps serving for as long as their team keeps winning rallies — you don't rotate on your own serve.

Timeouts and substitutions. Each team gets two timeouts per set (30–60 seconds by league) and, under FIVB rules, six substitutions per set. Tick a box for each one used — ticks reset every set, which is why the sheet gives each set its own row. Track subs honestly: a seventh sub request is a fault.

Changing ends. Teams swap ends between sets, and in the fifth set they swap again when the first team reaches 8 points — a good moment to double-check both ladders agree with the referee's score.

Using the sheet: fill the rotation boxes first, cross off points as rallies end, tick timeouts and subs as they're called, then copy each finished set's score into the summary grid. Running a whole club night of matches? Pair the sheets with the free round-robin generator to schedule the court.

Running score

Cross off a number each time that team wins a rally. Sets 1–4 go to 25, the deciding set to 15 — always win by 2 (keep counting past the end of the ladder if needed).
